Coinbase admits client data has been sold to third parties

Coinbase official has advised one of the reasons they acquired Neutrino (a blockchain analysis / intelligence company) was to bring this sort of technology in-house as their current provider was selling Coinbase’s client data to third parties.

Their acquisition of Neutrino has already been controversial this week, prompting #DeleteCoinbase hashtag to start trending on twitter and quite a bit of bad PR. This was due to the fact that before creating Neutrino, the founders were developing and selling spyware along with various other hacking tools that allowed police or governmental agencies to collect personal data on anyone.

Coinbase stood by their acquisition, advising they believed Neutrino’s tech was some of the industry’s best, but it seems like an extremely bad PR move to confirm your former providers were selling customer data.
