Using a keypair is indeed safer than using a password, for the same reason that cryptocurrencies use private keys instead of passwords.

If you want to use elliptic curve cryptography for your logins, just like BTC, ETH and ETC do, you should generate keys like this:

ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "[email protected]"
